What I've Learned Ordering Grow Lights for Our Facility

When I took over purchasing for our commercial greenhouse in 2022, I knew plants. I knew light schedules. What I didn't know was how to buy the actual fixtures—or how to explain to our finance team why a "cheap" light isn't always a deal.

We run three grow rooms and a small mother-plant area, so lighting is a recurring purchase. I've ordered from several brands, but we've settled on Spider Farmer for most of our new builds. Here's what I've learned about the numbers that actually matter—and a few questions I've had to dig to answer.


1. What's the Actual Wattage of the Spider Farmer SF2000?

This was the first question our head grower asked: "How much power does it pull from the wall, for real?" Not just the LED chip rating, but the whole system.

According to Spider Farmer's specs, the SF2000 draws 200W ± 5% from the wall. But here's where it gets interesting: the actual power consumption depends on your dimmer setting. At 100%, you're pulling that full 200W. But if you're running seedlings or using it in a small veg tent, you can crank it down to maybe 50W or less.

Take it from someone who had to justify a lighting order to a skeptical CFO: know your actual draw before you calculate electricity costs. The SF2000's 2.8 μmol/J efficiency means you're getting solid photon output for that 200W—roughly 560-600 PPF, depending on the exact unit. That's a ballpark of 2.7-3.0 μmol/J, which is competitive for this price tier.

Bottom line: expect 200W at the wall at max power. Budget your electricity accordingly.

2. How Do I Map PPFD for My Spider Farmer Fixture?

Honestly, I'm not entirely sure why some manufacturers make PPFD maps so hard to find. It's the single most important number for a commercial grower—how much usable light actually hits your canopy at a given height.

Spider Farmer does provide PPFD maps for their fixtures, but they're not always on the same product page. You might need to download the PDF manual or check the support section. For the SF2000, here's what I've come to rely on from their documentation and our own testing:

  • At 24 inches (60 cm) height: roughly 700-800 μmol/m²/s in the center, tapering to about 400 at the edges of a 3x3 ft area.
  • At 18 inches (45 cm): center readings push closer to 900-1000 μmol/m²/s, a solid level for flowering many plants.
  • For a full canopy in a 3x3 tent, the average PPFD across the footprint is around 600-750 μmol/m²/s—more than enough for veg and good for flower with CO2.

If you're buying multiple fixtures for a larger room, the GGS controller (more on that later) lets you dim and schedule them together, which makes dialing in your target PPFD way easier.

3. Can I Use Zigbee Sensors with My Spider Farmer System?

Yes—and this was a pleasant surprise for me. Spider Farmer's newer GGS (GrowGadget System) controller supports Zigbee 3.0 for sensor integration.

Here's what that means in practice: instead of running separate wires for temperature, humidity, and CO2 sensors (which gets messy fast in a multi-room facility), you can use compatible Zigbee sensors to feed data back to the controller. The GGS then adjusts your light schedule or intensity based on those readings, if you set up the automations.

We tested this with a $25 Zigbee temp/humidity sensor from a standard smart-home brand. It paired with the GGS hub without issues. Our grower can now check room conditions and light status from his phone—no more running back and forth to the environmental controller panel.

One caveat: not all Zigbee sensors work out of the box. Stick to well-known brands. I've also found that the effective range for the Zigbee sensors is about 30-40 feet through standard drywall, less if you have metal studs or shelving.

4. What About Emergency Lighting? Do These Fixtures Work During a Power Outage?

This is a question I didn't think to ask until we had a 4-hour outage in the middle of a flowering cycle. The answer is straightforward: Spider Farmer LED fixtures do not have built-in emergency battery backup.

Standard LED grow lights (Spider Farmer included) are line-voltage fixtures. When power goes out, they go out. Period.

If you need emergency lighting for your grow facility—to prevent total darkness stress on plants or to meet local building codes for egress—you'll need to install dedicated emergency ballasts or battery-backed LED drivers on at least some of your fixtures. This is an added cost and requires an electrician.

To be fair, this is true for almost any non-integrated commercial LED fixture. Spider Farmer's lights are designed for normal operation, not emergency backup. I'd suggest budgeting for a generator or UPS system if outages are a concern.

5. Can You Run an Outlet from a Light Switch? (And Why It Matters for Your Grow Room)

This question came up when we were wiring our third grow room. Our electrician asked: "You want the lights on a switch, or always-on with a controller?"

Here's the practical answer: Yes, you can wire an outlet to be controlled by a switch, but you need to understand the implications for grow lights.

  • If you use a standard wall switch to turn your Spider Farmer lights on/off: you're cutting power to the driver completely. That's fine for the fixture, but you lose all settings. When power comes back, the light will default to its last state (likely 100% brightness). If you're using a smart controller, that controller also loses power and needs to reboot.
  • What I recommend instead: have the electrician install a dedicated circuit with a standard outlet that's always live. Then plug your Spider Farmer controller into that outlet. The controller manages the light schedule. This way you don't lose controller settings during a power flicker, and you can still have a physical disconnect (breaker) for safety.

We learned this the hard way when we initially wired lights to a simple switch. Every time someone flipped it to clean the room, the controller reset. If you ask me, use the controller. It's a small extra step during install that saves headaches later.

6. Is Smart Control Worth It? (The GGS Controller Experience)

We started with individual light timers. Then we moved to a simple centralized timer. Then we bought our first Spider Farmer GGS controller.

After about 6 months of using the GGS, here's my honest take: it's a game-changer for multi-fixture setups. The ability to set sunrise/sunset ramps, dimming schedules per room, and see real-time power draw is genuinely useful. The 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and Zigbee support means it integrates well with our existing environmental sensors.

But it's not perfect. The mobile app is functional, not beautiful. I've had one firmware update that required a re-pair of all sensors. And if you only have one or two lights, a simple mechanical timer or a $30 smart plug might be more cost-effective.

Personally, I'd argue the value of the GGS increases with scale. For a 4-light room or a multi-zone facility, it's a no-brainer. For a single 2x4 tent, maybe skip it.

7. What About the G-Series vs. SF-Series? (A Quick Comparison)

I often get asked this by our growers: "Should we get the G-Series or the SF-Series?"

Here's the simplified view from a purchasing perspective:

  • G-Series (e.g., G4500, G8600): These are the newer, bar-style fixtures. They offer better light spread (especially for larger tents or rooms) and slightly higher efficiency (around 2.9-3.0 μmol/J). They're more expensive per fixture.
  • SF-Series (e.g., SF1000, SF2000, SF4000): These are the original, more compact boards. The SF2000 is a workhorse for a 3x3 or 2x4 space. The SF4000 covers a 4x4 well. They're slightly less efficient but cost less.

If you're on a tight budget or have odd-shaped spaces, the SF series is a solid choice. If you're building a new room and want maximum uniformity, the G-Series is worth the premium. We run a mix of both.


To be fair, no brand is perfect. There are cheaper options, and there are more expensive ones with slightly better specs. But in my experience, Spider Farmer strikes a solid balance between hardware quality, smart features, and price. An informed customer—whether you're a hobbyist or a commercial buyer—makes a faster decision. That's the payoff.
