The Project That Changed How I Buy Lighting

Back in early 2024, I got handed a project that was outside my usual wheelhouse. As the office administrator for a mid-sized facility management company—processing roughly 60–80 orders annually across eight vendors—I usually deal with janitorial supplies, breakroom coffee, and the occasional printer toner emergency. But when our operations director asked me to spec out a complete lighting system for our new indoor demonstration greenhouse, I figured, how different could it be from buying office lights?

The answer: very different. And I learned that the hard way.

The Old Assumption That Almost Cost Us

My first instinct was to go with what I knew: standard T5 fluorescents. They’re cheap, they’re familiar, and I could get them from three different vendors I already had accounts with. Plus, a sales rep I trusted told me, “Everyone uses T5s for starts. It’s the industry standard.”

So I ordered 24 four-foot T5 fixtures. About $1,800—maybe $1,700, I’d have to check the PO. They arrived in three days. I felt good about it.

Then the project manager called. “These lights don’t have the right spectrum. We need full spectrum LEDs for the crop trials we’re running.”

I felt my stomach drop. Not ideal. Worse than expected, honestly. I’d wasted department budget and the project timeline.

Why the T5s Didn’t Work (A Lesson Learned)

The issue wasn’t that T5s are bad lights. The issue was that they don’t give you control over the spectrum. Our client—a hydroponic herb grower—needed specific red and blue ratios for different growth stages. And they needed a controller that could automate day/night cycles and dimming.

T5s are either on or off. That’s it.

So I went back to the drawing board. This time, I asked the project manager to send me the actual specs: target PPFD, footprint size, and whether they needed any fancy automation for sunrise/sunset simulation.

“They want something with Zigbee so they can integrate it with their existing building management system,” he said.

Zigbee. I had to Google that. (This was back in Q1 2024, at least.)

Finding the Right Gear

After three weeks of research—and I mean three weeks of reading spec sheets, watching YouTube reviews, and calling technical support lines—I settled on a solution from Spider Farmer. Specifically, the G3000 300W full spectrum LED and the GGS smart grow light controller.

The Installation: Smooth, With One Surprise

Installation went smoothly. The lights mounted easily on the existing T-bar grid. The GGS controller paired with the Zigbee network in about ten minutes. Our electrician didn’t complain—which says a lot.

But then came the surprise. One of the client’s team members asked: “Does red light therapy cause cancer cells to grow?”

I froze. That wasn’t on the spec sheet. The project manager looked at me. I looked at my phone, and I started searching.

What I found was reassuring. There’s no credible evidence that red light therapy causes cancer cells to grow. In fact, most studies—like those referenced by the National Institutes of Health (NIH)—show red and near-infrared light can support cellular repair and reduce inflammation. The concern often comes from people confusing phototherapy wavelengths with UV radiation. They’re not the same.

The full spectrum LEDs we installed are designed for horticulture, not medical therapy. But the question made me realize: when you’re introducing new technology into a commercial environment, you need to anticipate those kinds of questions. A simple FAQ sheet would have saved me an awkward ten minutes.

What I Learned About Spectrum and Safety

This is where the “industry evolution” viewpoint really hit home. Five years ago, the conventional wisdom was that red light was just another color. Now, with photobiology research advancing, people ask better questions. The grow light market has to answer those questions with data, not marketing.

Spider Farmer publishes their spectrum graphs. You can see exactly which wavelengths are emitted. That transparency matters for B2B buyers like me, especially when we’re accountable to both operations and finance.

The Results: What Worked, What Didn’t

What worked: The G3000 lights produced excellent results in the herb trials. The client reported more uniform growth than their previous HPS setup, and the electricity savings were significant—about 40% lower wattage for comparable PPFD output. The GGS controller let them set sunrise, sunset, and day/night cycles without manual intervention. That was the selling point, and it delivered.

What didn’t work: We underestimated the need for additional training. The client’s staff wasn’t familiar with the app interface. I ended up spending three hours on Zoom walking them through the dimming schedules. Was it the product’s fault? No. But in hindsight, I should have budgeted for on-site training from the vendor.

The Takeaway: Trust the Data, Not the Habit

If someone asked me today what I’d do differently, I’d say: start with the controller, not the light. The controller is the brain. If it can’t talk to your building management system—or worse, if it relies on proprietary software that locks you in—you’re going to have a bad time.

Spider Farmer’s GGS system uses open standards like Zigbee. That meant our client could integrate it with their existing sensors and thermostats. That kind of flexibility is worth paying for.

The second lesson: don’t assume old best practices apply. What was standard in 2020—T5s, manual timers, fixed spectrum—may not be relevant in 2025. The industry has evolved. If you don’t evolve with it, you’ll end up ordering fixtures you have to return.

(And yes, I returned the T5s. Took three weeks to get the refund. That’s a story for another day.)
