There's no flat-rate answer to 'how much for electrician to install light fixture.' If someone gives you a number without asking about your circuit, your mounting height, and your controller, they're guessing. I've made that guess before. It didn't end well.

LED fixtures draw less than HID for the same light output, but they also come with drivers, dimmers, smart controllers, and Zigbee modules. That changes the electrical job from a simple swap to a system design.

That's your starting point, not your final bill. The final number depends on which of the four scenarios below matches your grow.

Scenario A: You're swapping one fixture for another on an existing circuit

This is the only spot where I'd say a basic swap can be DIY. If you already have a hardwired fixture on a grounded junction box, and the new fixture has the same voltage and a similar wattage, you're mostly connecting black to black, white to white, and ground. Scenario C: You're integrating a smart controller or a Zigbee product

But remember: Zigbee only carries the control signal. The relay that switches the light is still line voltage, and that side is not a DIY project.

I once paired the GGS controller to my phone, then decided to wire the relay into an existing switch box by myself. I saved $30 in labor and spent $180 to have an electrician fix it two days later. The relay didn't fit, the wires were too short, and the grounding was wrong. It didn't catch fire. It could have. That's the worst sentence in this article: 'It didn't catch fire. It could have.'

If your grow room has no daylight, an emergency light is not a style choice. It's part of your egress path, and building inspectors treat it seriously. Under NEC Article 700, emergency lighting must have battery backup or be arranged so it stays on when normal lighting fails. In many cases, that means a dedicated circuit or a separate emergency branch.

I had a grower ask why his electrician wanted $450 to install one emergency light. The answer wasn't the fixture itself—it was the requirement to feed it from the correct side of the panel and make sure no single switch could kill it. That's a different job from 'hang a fixture here.'

Budget $150-$350 per emergency light unit, plus $300-$1,000 if you need a separately protected circuit. This is the scenario where I'd never recommend DIY.

How to tell which scenario you're in before calling anyone

No one can tell you the price from a wattage number. But you can figure out the scenario in about ten minutes.

  1. Find the fixture nameplate. Is it hardwired, or does it have a standard plug? If it has a plug, you're closer to Scenario A. If it's hardwired, you're in Scenario B, C, or D.
  2. Count the fixtures on the same circuit. Take wattage divided by voltage, then multiply by 1.25 for continuous load. On a 15A breaker, stay under 12A. On a 20A breaker, stay under 16A.
  3. Open the panel and look for an empty breaker slot. No empty slot? You're about to pay for a sub-panel or a new breaker position.
  4. Ask whether you're adding a controller, sensor, relay, or Zigbee product. If yes, assume an electrician needs to touch the line-voltage side unless the fixture has a listed plug and outlet.
  5. Ask your local building department about permits. Adding a circuit and adding emergency lighting usually require a permit. A simple swap can go either way.

What I'd do differently if I started over in 2025

It took me four years and about eleven medium-to-large mistakes to understand something that should have been obvious: electrical installation is not where you save money. The upside of doing it myself was at most $300-$400. The risk was a fire, an inspector finding a violation, or an insurance claim getting denied. I kept asking myself: is $400 worth potentially losing the whole grow?

Everything I'd read said swapping a light fixture is a beginner DIY job. In practice, that's true only when the beginner is confident enough to test every wire before touching it. I wasn't. That's what made my mistakes expensive.

Run your load calc first, get the permit second, and let the electrician do the part that can burn the building down. That's the mistake I'd rather you not repeat.
